One of the most common things I hear from couples when we first connect is some version of the same few concerns: they’re worried about being awkward in front of the camera, not knowing what to do or how to pose, or they don’t want their images to feel forced. These are completely understandable feelings, and they’re a big part of why my approach to natural wedding photography looks the way it does!
Why I Don’t Over-Direct on Your Wedding Day: My Natural Wedding Photography Approach

I take a documentary-style approach to your wedding photos, which allows me to capture your wedding day as it naturally unfolds.
Some of the most meaningful images come from those in-between moments, so I’ve built my method around capturing those along with the big, memorable moments. This gives you a gallery that takes you right back to the way your day felt, and you won’t feel like you’ve been overdirected or overposed throughout the day.

What Over-Directing Can Do to Your Wedding Photos
When a photographer over-directs, it pulls you out of the moment. Wedding days already come with enough awareness and pressure on their own, and adding a layer of constant choreography on top of that can create self-consciousness that shows up in your photos.
Couples often share examples of this with me from weddings they’ve attended or been a part of in the past. For instance, a photographer stopping a heartfelt moment mid-happy-tears during the getting-ready portion of the day to adjust or recreate a shot. This pulls everyone out of what was naturally unfolding, and when that happens, the moment is often gone.
Over-directing can create images that look polished but don’t necessarily feel like the people in them. And at the end of the day, your wedding photos should feel like you, not like a production!
What Natural Wedding Photography Actually Looks Like

When there’s space to breathe on a wedding day, people settle into themselves and start to forget about the camera. Small, authentic interactions begin to emerge on their own, personality starts showing up, genuine expressions replace “camera expressions,” and friends and family interact more organically with each other.
Some of my favorite moments come from this space, like a hand naturally reaching for another hand, a parent watching from across the room, a private joke during portraits, or a breath before you walk down the aisle. The way you look at each other when you think nobody is paying attention makes for the most heartfelt images. And those aren’t moments that can be directed into existence, rather, they need to be allowed to happen.

I’m Lightly Guiding but Never Absent

This is an important distinction I always like to clarify with my couples–not over-directing doesn’t mean I’m hands-off or passive. Documentary-style photography actually requires your photographer to be actively moving, anticipating, and framing, all without altering the action that’s unfolding. It’s a practiced and intentional skill.
I’m paying astute attention throughout your entire day and stepping in when you need it. I’ll guide you on where to stand, help you find the best light, and organize family portraits so that portion of your day feels efficient and easy. But you’ll never be left wondering what to do with your hands or where to look!
And at the same time, you’ll also never feel like I don’t respect or value the moments that happen organically. That balance is at the heart of my photography approach.

Natural Wedding Photography and My Bigger Philosophy
I always want your wedding to feel like a gathering and celebration, not a production for the camera. It’s important to me to preserve how you and those around you felt on your wedding day, so your gallery feels authentic to you and full of life. This is why I take a natural wedding photography approach and never overdirect on your day.
