For couples planning engagement photos, there can be a lot to consider. From the location of the session, to what to wear, it can get overwhelming! So I’m sharing my top four engagement photo tips for couples in New England. My goal is for you to have a great time at our session so that you can relax, and I can capture your true selves and love for each other.
Tip #1: Visualize How You Want Your Engagement Photos To Feel, And Then Decide On A Location
When it comes to selecting the location for your engagement photos, I always suggest to my couples to first visualize how you want your photos to feel, and then we’ll plan the location from there. Do you want an adventurous feel? Let’s go for your favorite hike in the mountains. Maybe you’d like more of a casual feel? We can plan a fun afternoon picnic in the park or an evening at the beach. Or, perhaps you’re looking for a more formal feel to your photos? We can go somewhere like the Boston Public Library or the Museum of Fine Arts.
We are so lucky to have such a beautiful landscape here in New England. I’ll happily meet you in Maine for some rocky coastal photos, in New Hampshire for gorgeous fall foliage pictures, or in downtown Boston if a city backdrop is more your thing. I personally love New England weather and if you settle on an outdoor location, we’ll be sure to have a good time regardless of any poor weather. I always encourage my couples though to embrace a little rain or wind, (even if it messes up your hair a little bit!) because we’ll wind up capturing the real fun you’re having and your images will turn out to be authentically you! However, I’m definitely flexible and happy to reschedule due to weather.
Tip # 2: Think Of Your Engagement Photo Session As A Date
My goal for our session together is to really capture your love for each other in a truly authentic way. So I always recommend to my couples to think of our session as a date – let’s plan something you love to do! It’s always a fun idea to spend the day together somewhere or to go out for dinner and drinks. This allows you to be yourselves, gives you an excuse to love on each other, and also gets you in a great headspace for photos. I love this time with my couples because I get to see the way that you care for each other and make each other laugh, which is so easy to do when we’re just hanging out doing something fun.
Tip #3: Relax And Be Yourselves
I love to work with my couples to create an engagement photo session that they really relate to. Hopefully, the setting we choose sets the scene for you to be able to relax and be yourselves! As long as my couples come to a session ready to love on each other, I handle the rest. I’ll ask you to have an open mind and I’ll make sure you know that there is zero pressure on you.
There’s no need to bring any special props either – however, I have had a blast in some sessions with furry friends! Feel free to bring your pup along and I’ll capture your whole family just as you are. And remember, we’re not meeting to pose for perfect photos – all you have to do is just relax and have fun, and leave the rest to me! I will guide you through interactions, and focus on creating intentional moments that are authentic. This way we capture truly beautiful engagement photos that you will treasure forever.
Tip # 4: Choose Engagement Photo Outfits That You Are Comfortable and Confident In
Deciding on engagement photo outfits can be tricky for some, but I always encourage my couples to wear clothes that you are comfortable in and can rock confidently! You don’t need to dress super fancy, unless you want to of course. I also always suggest avoiding clashing outfits, but you don’t need to get too matchy-matchy and coordinate perfectly for great photos. I have a styling service that I share with my couples for outfit inspiration and coordination. Purchasing pieces isn’t necessary, but it provides you links if interested! I also share a “what to wear guide” that I created to give you additional tips to help combine your style with your session location.
Ultimately, I want to design an engagement photo session that really feels like you. No matter where you choose to shoot, we’ll have a blast doing what you love to do and I’ll be there to capture your love honestly.
